Cleaning an industrial bellows may seem like a minor task within general machine maintenance. However, it’s one of the times when material wear accelerates the most, almost always due to using the wrong method, not a lack of maintenance.

A bellows well-designed for its environment can lose years of useful life due to aggressive cleaning, an unsuitable chemical, or a technique that forces the material to fold. Here’s what you should know before cleaning one.

Why improper cleaning causes more damage than dirt

Dirt, on its own, rarely destroys a bellows immediately. The problem arises when, in trying to remove it, the material’s structure is compromised: micro-cracks open in the folds, the coating of the technical fabric degrades, or the seams weaken.

From that point on, the bellows no longer fails due to normal wear and tear, but rather due to a weak point created during its own maintenance.

First, identify the material.

Before choosing a cleaning method or product, it’s essential to know what material you’re working with, as its tolerance to chemicals, temperature, and friction varies considerably:
● Synthetic technical fabrics: These generally withstand cleaning well with water and neutral detergents, but can degrade with aggressive solvents or high cleaning temperatures.

● Technical leather (chrome or tannin): This is more sensitive to strong alkaline products and prolonged exposure to moisture, which can affect its flexibility if not dried properly.

● Materials for corrosive environments (wastewater treatment plant bellows): These often have specific coatings that should not be removed with abrasive cleaners, as this layer contributes to their chemical resistance.

If you are unsure of the material or coating of the installed part, the safest option is to consult the manufacturer before applying any product.

The correct method depends on the material, but there is a general sequence that minimizes risk in most cases:
1. Remove surface dirt while dry, using a cloth or soft brush, before applying any liquid.

2. Use water and a neutral detergent as a first option, avoiding abrasive products or those with an extreme pH.

3. Apply the product with a cloth, not by spraying it directly onto the folds.

4. Pay special attention to the seams, cleaning carefully and without forcing the material in that area.

5. Allow to dry at room temperature, without direct exposure to heat sources.

6. Visually inspect the condition of the bellows after cleaning, looking for micro-cracks, stiff areas, or loss of flexibility in the folds. This last step is as important as the cleaning itself: it transforms a maintenance task into an opportunity for preventative inspection, without any additional time cost.

What to avoid when cleaning a bellow

There are several common practices in the factory that, while seemingly harmless, are responsible for a significant portion of premature failures:

  • High-pressure compressed air applied directly to the folds, which can force the material beyond its controlled folding limits.

  • Solvents or products incompatible with technical fabrics or leather tanning, which degrade fibers and coatings.

  • Aggressive brushing of the seams, precisely the most sensitive point of the entire piece.

  • Drying with direct heat, which can affect the material’s flexibility, especially in technical leather.

  • Holding or manipulating the bellows outside its natural range of motion to clean internal areas, which puts stress on folds not designed for that position.

    1. Retirar la suciedad superficial en seco, con un paño o cepillo suave, antes de aplicar cualquier líquido.
    2. Usar agua y un detergente neutro como primera opción, evitando productos abrasivos o de pH extremo.
    3. Aplicar el producto con un paño, no proyectado a presión directa sobre los pliegues.
    4. Prestar especial atención a las uniones, limpiando con cuidado y sin forzar el material en esa zona.
    5. Dejar secar a temperatura ambiente, sin exposición directa a fuentes de calor.
    6. Revisar visualmente el estado del fuelle tras la limpieza, buscando microfisuras, zonas rígidas o pérdida de flexibilidad en los pliegues.

    Este último paso es tan importante como la propia limpieza: convierte una tarea de mantenimiento en una oportunidad de inspección preventiva, sin coste adicional de tiempo.

When cleaning is no longer enough

If, after proper cleaning, the material still shows stiffness, cracks in the folds, or loss of elasticity, it’s not a problem with the cleaning technique, but rather the end of the part’s useful life. Insisting on more aggressive cleaning at this point will only accelerate failure.

In these cases, the most efficient approach is to assess whether the installed bellows is still suitable for the actual working conditions, or if it’s advisable to review the material specifications before replacing it with an identical one.
