Zero accidents. That’s your priority as an industrial maintenance manager. That’s why you dedicate time and resources to reviewing fencing, emergency stops, signage, and protocols.

But there’s a gray area that many internal audits overlook: dynamic entrapment points.

These are moving parts that, during normal machinery operation, can become a silent hazard for operators. And the most dangerous thing is that they aren’t always visible.

If you want your machine guarding to be truly effective and your plant to reflect impeccable management, there are three critical points that deserve your attention in the next round of inspections.

Exposed guides and spindles: magnets for fingers and clothing

Linear guides and ball screws are essential components in machining centers, presses, and positioning systems. They are also, without exaggeration, a magnet for accidents.

What to check in your audit:
● Are exposed spindles and guides protected with protective bellows or telescopic covers?
● Does the protection allow visibility of the process without compromising safety?
● Are the bellows properly secured and free of play that could allow access?

Installing custom-fit bellows at these points not only improves safety but also extends the service life of the components by isolating them from contamination.

Scissor lifts: the shear risk you don’t see

Lifting platforms, scissor lifts, and hydraulic lifting systems are common tools in warehouses, workshops, and assembly lines. Their scissor mechanism, when extended or retracted, generates a high-energy shear point.

What to check in your audit:
● Do the lifting platforms have side guards that prevent access to the scissor mechanism?
● Are the mechanical locking systems operational and used during maintenance?
● Is there clear signage in danger zones?

In many cases, installing side protective bellows or telescopic guards can completely eliminate the risk of entrapment without limiting the equipment’s functionality.

Worn bellows: a false sense of security

A torn, ripped, or improperly secured bellows is more than just a maintenance issue. It’s a safety risk that is often underestimated.

What to check in your audit:
      ● Are all installed bellows in good condition, without tears, punctures, or worn areas?
      ● Are the fixings (flanges, clamps, profiles) secure and free of play?
      ● Is there a preventative replacement plan for bellows with a high cycling rate?

A bellows in poor condition not only fails to protect the machine, but it can also mask a mechanical failure (a leak, abnormal wear) that the operator won’t detect in time. In industrial maintenance, prevention also involves checking these seemingly minor elements.

Machine guards in good condition are the best sign of a well-managed plant.

When an external auditor, a customer, or a manager tours your plant, certain details speak for themselves. Intact bellows, properly secured and adapted to each application, convey order, foresight, and a strong safety culture.

Conversely, torn, poorly adjusted, or missing bellows at critical points are a red flag. They indicate that industrial maintenance is reactive rather than proactive, and that safety may be compromised.
